LegendaryLongmont Seniors: Ernie Clark and Thelma Horton

Ernie and Thelma are bothresidents at The Longmont Regent. Ernie is 104 years old and he is a greatnominee for being a Longmont Legend because of his age, and how well heremembers every aspect of his life and others around him. He has been herelonger than almost anyone else in town.

Thelma is 98 years old, aboutto celebrate her 99th birthday. Thelma is quite the character with her crazyoutfits and outgoing attitude she has a way of making anybody laugh. She willalways participate in anything she can get her hands on and is a wonderful partof the community.

Caring for Colorado Awards CareConnect $20,000

Caring for Colorado Foundation has awarded CareConnect $20,000 to support the Medical Mobility program. Medical Mobility provides access to direct health services for seniors, adults with disabilities and chronically ill through the efforts of dedicated volunteer drivers.

Support from Caring for Colorado will help increase the capacity of this growing program. By July 31, 2012 CareConnect volunteers will provide 5,000 medical rides for over 350 Boulder County residents. This grant will also allow CareConnect to increase its volunteer recruitment efforts to meet the need for affordable escorted medical transportation.

The Caring for Colorado Foundation is a health grantmaker making health and accessible health care more of a reality for people in Colorado every day through targeted grants that provide measurable health improvements. Awarded grants build health care capacity, strengthen existing health care systems and link people to care.

We recently received this kind note from a Medical Mobility client who receives rides from Longmont to Denver once a week.

"I wanted to write a heartfelt thank you for the work you are doing and the volunteers on the Medical Mobility service. From December 2010 to June 2011 I have been 80-90% housebound. I have been under a doctor's care, but he was not able to figure out what has been wrong. Much suffering has been endured and until this Dr. Mills in Denver was recommended I felt I had little hope.

Thanks to your generous work and the volunteers I now feel that there is hope for me. There is no way I could drive myself to the appointment in Denver. I don't really know how to truly express my gratitude. Now I can have more peace of mind knowing I am able to get to the appointment in Denver and have the opportunity to obtain the

critical medical care I need. It's truly an answer to a prayer!!!!

Fix-It Moves Outside!

CareConnect is pleased to announce its newest Safety Net Service - YardBusters! Since 1973 CareConnect's Fix-It program has provided minor home repairs inside the home, and now YardBusters volunteers will help seniors and adults with disabilities manage the outside of their homes as well.

In order to get this service started CareConnect needs volunteers! If you love working outside and helping others in the community, join YardBusters! Volunteer time is flexible and dependent upon your schedule. Although volunteers are especially needed who have and can transport their own lawn mower, volunteers of any ability are welcome - with or without yard maintenance tools!

A high priority of the program is to reduce the risk of falls outside the home by removing potential safety hazards such as branches and brush. Other volunteer tasks may include: removing weeds, raking leaves, spring garden preparation, removal of small tree limbs and occasional lawn mowing.

CareConnect Receives $25,000 Daniels Fund Grant

CareConnect announced today that it has received a $25,000 Daniels Fund grant to support its direct services for seniors and adults with disabilities throughout Boulder County.

CareConnect promotes the security, comfort and independence of seniors and adults with disabilities. CareConnect’s volunteer-powered programs include: Medical Mobility, volunteer-escorted rides to medical appointments; Fix-It, minor home repairs and fall prevention; and Carry-Out Caravan, weekly grocery shopping and delivery program.

“This grant will enable our program to provide life-sustaining safety net services to 4,500 low-income and underserved seniors and adults with disabilities in our community in 2011,” says Richard Varnes, CareConnect Executive Director.

CareConnect Awarded $65,066 Grant to Fund "50Up!"

The Colorado Health Foundation has awarded CareConnect a grant totaling $65,066 to produce the television show “50Up!” for two years. The TV talk show airs throughout Boulder County and its focus is to promote health and wellness for older adults.

Through the generous support of the Colorado Health Foundation, CareConnect is able to produce the monthly talk show, which features local resources and information regarding healthcare, healthy living, disease prevention strategies, and access to recreational exercise and nutrition information.

For many elderly individuals, television media is an excellent way to gain knowledge and stay in contact with current events. One CareConnect homebound client named Jean said, “Without television, I would be cut off from the rest of the world.”

“50Up!” offers a way for people like Jean to gain valuable life-enhancing knowledge and to stay connected to the community. “50Up!” airs multiple times a day on Channel 8 and Channel 3 throughout Boulder County and can also be watched online at careconnectbc.org.

• Fix-It Team Members: Volunteers needed to help provide minor home repairs and grab bar installation for clients throughout Boulder County. Hours are flexible, and jobs are assigned based on your schedule.
• IceBusters: Volunteers needed in the City of Boulder to shovel walkways for neighbors after a snowstorm. We match you to a client in need in your area.

On Saturday, December 11, the Mark Vann Foundation will host its 8th Annual Holiday Benefit Show at the Boulder Theater. This is the second year the event will benefit two local non-profits – CareConnect and There With Care.

The show will feature many great bands, including: Todd Snider, Great American Taxi, Bonfire Dub, Shannon McNally & Hot Sauce plus special guests and surprises! Mark Vann’s spirit parted company with his body on March 4, 2002. Mark consistently lived by the motto of “Go Big!” and he applied this motto to both playing music and his unending willingness to offer his time and knowledge to teach anybody who wanted to learn. He encouraged others to “Dream Big,” “Go Big,” and “Pick Big,” and personally supported their efforts to do so.

Be Prepared for Winter!

Winter is beautiful in Boulder County when the Flatirons are dusted with snow, and the sun is shining overhead. But winter is also the time of year to take extra safety precautions. With unpredictable weather, its best to be prepared to rely on additional help for those days when the snow is accumulating and doesn’t seem to be stopping.

CareConnect is here to help! Although our services are available year round, we understand that there is increased need when the sidewalks are icy and the streets are piled with snow. Be prepared for the coming winter by connecting with CareConnect.

If you live in the City of Boulder, sign up for IceBusters. CareConnect will match you with a volunteer who lives in your neighborhood to shovel your sidewalk when there is a snowstorm. Because of limited funding, this program is only available in Boulder at this time.

And don’t forget to prepare your home for winter! Weatherization services are available through our Fix-It program and help keep your home warm and insulated, while saving you money on gas and electric bills. Weatherization services include replacing furnace filters, weather-stripping for drafty doors and windows, window plastic application, caulking and sealant application to window frames. Please call the Fix-It team at 303-443-1933 x 413 for IceBusters or weatherization services.

Enroll in the Carry-Out Caravan grocery delivery program. Even if you are able to grocery shop on your own, it’s good to have a back-up plan in case of a big storm. Our volunteers are extremely dedicated and deliver groceries no matter the weather! We will make sure you can receive the food and materials you need if you are unable to get out of the house. Support Local Veterans - Be Hungry For Change!

On Veteran’s Day, Thursday, November 11, two local non-profits – CareConnect and Veterans Helping Veterans Now – are teaming up with 20 local restaurants for “Hungry For Change.” This fun event is simple – eat at a participating restaurant and a portion of your meal will be donated to support veterans in Boulder County!

There are at least 20,000 veterans in Boulder County facing a multitude of hardships. “Homelessness, unemployment rates, domestic violence incidents, divorce rates and rates of substance abuse continue to increase and be higher for veterans than for their non-military counterparts,” says Judy Nogg, Co-Executive Director of Veterans Helping Veterans Now (VHV Now). “Also, the suicide rate among veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan is four times higher than the general public; with the increasing number of returning veterans, the programs provided by VHV and CareConnect will be critical to the health and safety of our veterans,” says Nogg.

CareConnect promotes the security, comfort and independence of seniors and adults with disabilities; many CareConnect clients, as well as their spouses, are veterans of Vietnam, Korea, and WWII. Services include: medical transportation, grocery shopping and delivery service, and minor home repairs. CareConnect and VHV Now collaborate to make sure veterans are getting the rides they need to go to the VA for appointments.

CareConnect Awarded $20,000 from Rose Community Foundation

CareConnect has been awarded a $20,000 grant from Rose Community Foundation to support the Fix-It, Carry-Out Caravan and Medical Mobility programs.

These programs provide seniors and adults with disabilities throughout Boulder County with minor home repairs, grocery delivery and medical transportation. All are volunteer-powered, offering clients flexibility and personal attention to keep them safe and independent in their own homes.

“The generous support of Rose Community Foundation is instrumental in the development and growth of CareConnect,” says Maureen Ewing, Executive Director of CareConnect. “We are experiencing increased demand for our services, and this grant will allow us to provide these life-sustaining services to over 4,000 seniors and adults with disabilities in Boulder County this year.”

CareConnect Awarded $6,000 from Jared Polis Foundation Gift Fund

CareConnect, a local Boulder County non-profit, has been awarded a $6,000 grant from the Jared Polis Foundation Gift Fund. These funds will be used to support the Medical Mobility program, which provides volunteer-escorted transportation to medical appointments for seniors and adults with disabilities.

Medical Mobility has grown tremendously over the past few months! In July, 73 Medical Mobility volunteers provided 377 rides to medical appointments! The funds from the Jared Polis Foundation Gift Fund will allow CareConnect to continue to build capacity to meet the needs of the growing Boulder County senior population.

One client said, "I am extremely grateful for the Medical Mobility service. The program has helped make my life so much less painful. I greatly enjoy the company of the volunteer, who is such a warm and wonderful person. Without the support of this program I would not be able to receive the care I need."

CareConnect Receives $5,000 from Adolph Coors Foundation

CareConnect has received a $5,000 grant from the Adolph Coors Foundation to provide volunteer-powered direct services to seniors and adults with disabilities throughout Boulder County.

These services include weekly grocery shopping and delivery, minor home repairs, and volunteer-escorted rides to medical appointments.

“The current downturn in the economy has created an even greater demand for CareConnect services,” said Maureen Ewing, Executive Director of CareConnect. “This grant allows CareConnect to continue to build the capacity to meet the independence needs of the rapidly growing Boulder County senior population.”

The Adolph Coors Foundation is a private family foundation established in 1975. It has awarded almost 4,000 grants totaling over $154 million to community agencies throughout Colorado.

Medical Mobility Receives $20,000 Grant

CareConnect has received a $20,000 grant from The Caring for Colorado Foundation to support the Medical Mobility program.

Medical Mobility provides volunteer-escorted, medical rides for underserved populations including seniors, adults with disabilities, and the chronically ill. With this grant, more than 70 volunteers will help provide at least 4,300 medical rides for at least 350 unduplicated clients.

“Thanks to the generosity of The Caring for Colorado Foundation, we will continue to expand our transportation service,” said Allison Dellwo, Medical Mobility Manager. “We often meet individuals who were unable to visit a doctor in years simply because they had no way to get to and from their appointments. This grant will allow us to reach even more seniors and adults with disabilities who need help accessing the health care they need.”

The Caring for Colorado Foundation is a health grantmaker making health and accessible health care more of a reality for people in Colorado every day through targeted grants that provide measurable health improvements. The Caring for Colorado Foundation is providing grants totaling $2.2 million designed to boost health care in Colorado.

CareConnect is a Boulder County non-profit organization that provides direct services to seniors and adults with disabilities. CareConnect announced today it has received a $15,000 grant from The Denver Foundation.

CareConnect promotes the security, comfort, and independence of seniors and adults with disabilities through free and low cost Safety-Net Services.

“In these tough economic times the need for our services has never been more apparent,” said Maureen Ewing, Executive Director of CareConnect. “This grant allows CareConnect to continue to provide much-needed services to the underserved in the community.”

CareConnect provides free grocery shopping and delivery, minor home repairs (including weatherization services, fall prevention, DTV converter box installs, and energy kits), as well as escorted rides to medical appointments.

The Denver Foundation is a community foundation dedicated to improving life in Metro Denver through philanthropy, leadership, and strengthening the community. Community foundations are endowments—permanent pools of money contributed by donors to benefit a specific geographic area. In 2009, The Foundation awarded $38 million to nonprofit organizations.

Welcome to Our New Fix-It Coordinator, Will!

CareConnect would like to welcome Will Duane, our new Ice Busters and Fix-It Coordinator! Will is taking over for Logan, our previous Coordinator, who helped kick-start the Ice Busters program at CareConnect.

Originally from East Montpelier, Will attended the University of Vermont in Burlington where he studied Political Science with minors in English and Theatre. While at UVM he participated in numerous productions as an actor, lighting designer, and electrician. After graduation he and his now fiancée Victoria spent six months backpacking in Europe and traveling to over twenty different countries!

In the fall of 2009 Will moved to Colorado was hired by CareConnect through the AmeriCorps Vista program. An avid skier and hiker, he is a great fit for our community! Hoping to attend Law School in the fall of 2011, he is spending this year working for CareConnect and studying for the LSATs.

Will says that he is “so excited to be a part of this great team of enthusiastic and dedicated individuals.” During Will’s orientation at CareConnect he participated in Carry-Out Caravan services delivering groceries, and he loved the experience, saying “seeing the smiles on the faces of clients and hearing how grateful they are for our services makes me so proud to be a part of CareConnect. I am very excited to make a small but significant difference in the lives of others in need.” We have confidence that he will do just that and more at CareConnect. Welcome, Will!

RSVP of Boulder County has changed its name to CareConnect!

We've changed our name, but at heart we're still the same!

On February 14, 2010, RSVP of Boulder County will take on a new name - CareConnect - in order to ore accurately reflect the direct services provided to seniors and adults with disabilities.

Formerly named RSVP, CareConnect promotes the security, comfort and independence of older adults and adults with disabilities. Since 1972, the RSVP program has connected older adults with volunteer opportunities in their communities. CareConnect will remain the home of hte RSVP volunteer program, along with other direct services: Carry-Out Caravan, grocery shopping and delivery; Fix-It, minor home repairs, energy use reduction and snow shoveling; and Medical Mobility, transportation to medical appointments.

With teh current economy bringing hard times for so many, CareConnect is committed to providing the comfort and support that so many rely on. In Boulder County, an increasing number of older residents live in poverty. There are currently 8,948 adults over the age of sixty in Boulder County living on less than $21,660 per year, adn 2,600 older adults living on less than $10,830 per year. It is projected that by the year 2020 more than 70,000 Boulder County residents will be over the age of 60 and may require CareConnect services to remain independent.

AARP research shows that nine out of ten Americans prefer to remain in their homes as they age, and that the average cost for a nursing home in Colorado is $66,613 per year. But for many older adults, living alone can be a struggle without outside assistance. CareConnect helps Boulder County residents live independently.

Many thanks to the 150 volunteers who turned out to deliver 900 Holiday Fruit Baskets on Saturday December 12. Thanks to you, over two tons of fresh fruit was distributed to low income older adults and people living with disabilities. Our drivers shared their time and good wishes with individuals who may not
have many visitors this holiday season.

Our thanks also go out to all the people who worked behind the scenes to make our event run smoothly. A special thanks to Bill, Wendell and Alex who drove our trucks and did the heavy lifting. Thanks also to Penske Trucking in Boulder and Crate Technologies in Longmont for donating use of their trucks for our program.

Since 2001, Bill Cameron has dedicated countless hours to volunteering for RSVP of Boulder County. RSVP of Boulder County is a non-profit organization that advocates security, comfort and independence of seniors and adults with disabilities.

Cameron came to RSVP after retiring.

“I heard about their handyman program. I was an engineer by education and wanted to work with my hands,” says Cameron.

Since joining, Cameron has installed handrails, grab bars, worked with plumbing, and has participated in numerous other projects. He also serves as a teacher who educates other volunteers on fix-it projects.

“Every visit is special in terms of the people. It has put me in touch with people I would not have met otherwise,” he says.

In addition to the fix-it program, Cameron is on the RSVP board of directors. He also participates in the Carry-Out Caravan program, and is a handyman and exhibit design volunteer at WOW! Children’s Museum in Lafayette. The volunteer experience has greatly enriched Cameron’s life. “I simply like helping other people and doing it for free.”

Volunteer Spotlight - Sheila Groel

A Boulder County resident since 1963, Sheila Groel knows her way around town. Since becoming a volunteer driver last May, Sheila has gained a reputation as a reliable, friendly, kind-hearted and flexible driver. Clients regularly request her, and she has been a wonderful addition to our diverse group of dedicated volunteers.

Like many of our volunteers Sheila leads a very active and energetic life; her passions range from traveling the world and hiking, to playing the violin, and reading. She is the founder of a small web design company, which assists starter businesses in gaining a presence on the web. She spends a lot of her time converting analog slides, LP records, cassettes, and old photos into digital format. Between traveling to New Zealand and Australia for her 20^thwedding anniversary and running her own web design company, it’s a wonder that Sheila has been able to dedicate so much time to RSVP!

Sheila first heard about RSVP’s Volunteer Driver Program from an article in the “Longmont Life” newsletter and thought to herself, “I could do that!” Since then she’s made numerous personal connections and has been inspired by the people she meets. “I am always amazed at the vast assortment of different personalities and lifestyles of my riders,” she explains, “as well as the amazing ways in which they have adapted to their circumstances.” A few clients in particular have made a uniquely strong impression; on her very first ride Sheila met a client who she describes as having “an amazing ability to stay practically anywhere in the world for almost nothing. She had traveled all over Europe and had just returned from a six month stay.”

In addition, Sheila frequently helps one client who she says provides inspiration when she is having a bad day or wants to complain about her life. This client is a gold medal winner in the Special Olympics and Sheila describes her as “always cheerful, chatty, and friendly, and her social life is busier than my own!” These types of connections are what make volunteering for RSVP a uniquely personal and gratifying experience for Sheila.

Sheila provided some great insight when it comes to volunteering. She advised that “If you’re not ready to listen to or to solicit life stories from riders, you may miss out on a wonderful conversation.” Here at RSVP we have indeed found that advice to be a fundamental part of our program. Congratulations to Sheila and all of our amazing volunteers for working so hard to provide this essential service!

RSVP of Boulder County Receives $25,000 Grant from The Daniels Fund

Seniors and Health Care Reform

The real story is that 30,000 people in Boulder County are without some sort of healthcare coverage (Boulder County Trends Report). Lets make a difference by supporting local agencies that are maintaining the health of our community.

We are lucky in Boulder County to have a strong network of community health centers that primarily serve our low-income and uninsured populations.

While you are perusing information about healthcare reform, you may want to consider all the great volunteer opportunities that RSVP offers for volunteering in a healthcare field. Besides our own services, we also assist many other agencies in placing volunteers aged 55+. All of these healthcare agencies provide excellent options for volunteers to make a real difference. Volunteer Spotlight- Drew Kramer

One of the toughest challenges facing older adults and people with disabilities is keeping up with home repairs. Whether it’s changing a smoke detector battery or installing grab bars in the bathroom, we often need a helping hand to get the job done.

RSVP of Boulder County would like to honor Drew Kramer, an RSVP Fix It program Handyman as the Volunteer of the Month. Drew brings knowledge, skill and experience to home repair projects and volunteers his time and expertise throughout the county. As an RSVP volunteer, Drew responds to a wide variety of home repair needs. Installing smoke detectors, fixing electrical and plumbing problems, replacing burned out lights with energy efficient bulbs, and doing a variety of other home repair projects helps people live safely and independently.
Originally from Kansas, Drew moved to Longmont to be closer to family. He likes living in Longmont because “it has that home town feel, while still being close to major cities and the mountains.” Drew retired from the Manufacturing and Steel Industry, but has always enjoyed home improvement projects. Now that he has settled in Longmont, he has launched a new career as an active volunteer. Drew volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, building homes for low income families, and with the RSVP Fix It program.

According to Drew, “The best thing about RSVP is that when somebody calls they know they can get somebody they trust.” Volunteering is also a constant learning experience. “I’m always learning something new, or running into a Fix It job I haven’t seen before.”

Drew recounts an experience working with one senior who lives in a house that is over one hundred years old. He really enjoyed the challenge of repairing old wiring and seeing the vintage light fixtures and switches. Drew says that Fix It volunteers need some experience with home repair, and then have to analyze the problem and figure out the best solution for the task.
“I like to go the extra mile and make sure that I get the job done right. Sometimes I have to find parts for 30 year old bathroom fans, do research on the internet, and really figure out how to solve the problem. I run into pretty unique situations, “ he states. The best part of being a Fix It volunteer is seeing the relief and appreciation from Fix It program clients. “It’s satisfying to know I’ve really made a difference,” Drew points out.
